While doing some junk inventory in the shed, i found an old POS i never care to see: my first RC plane, called the Flyzone Skyfly.

Image

It doesn't even count as hobby-grade, just take a look inside of it! there's no receiver slots, the motor is soldered directly into the circuit board, & the servos are just 2 tiny winches.
Image

The worst part about it are the controls, the elevator & rudder are only one-sided. One side is pulled on by fishing line, the other just gets resistance from a rubber band. A rubber band doesn't cut it when you need to turn something moving faster than 30mph!

The only reason I even have this thing is because it was a Christmas present from my brother. He says he got it from a hobby shop, but the place was called "Trump's Toy and Hobby. Keyword: TOY

i've flown those. they are perfect if you have never done it before, but you can quickly outgrow them. its actually a good segway to start getting into rc flying.

did you fly the skyfly(yellow) or the skyfly 2(red)? the skyfly 2 has actual metal servo rods so it has FULL steering/elevator control, the skyfly 1 puts half of its control on fishing line & puts the other half on rubber bands. even after constant adjustments, full tilt up on the transmitter only made it turn up just slightly. Weak controls!

well, the sky fly 1 is designed that way K. its designed to be under powered, and with minimal control throws so the inexperienced flyer doesn't get themselves into trouble by over controlling the thing. Everything about this plane, from the rubber bands, to the airfoil, are designed to make the thing want to stay straight and level all the time.
Seems like you quickly got bored with it, and thus picked up the flying skill very quickly. Props (no pun intended) to you man. If you ever get into flying again, let me know. I will point you in the right direction for something a bit faster and harder to fly.

The part I didn't like about the plane was when I see it drifting down low and aiming for a tree, i would turn the controls but it wouldnt turn at all. It was a pain in the ass getting it out of that tree!

OK at flying maybe. I was much better with my Madhawk 300 heli. I'm interested in the kinetic 800 glider http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15441__HobbyKing_Kinetic_800_Mini_Glider_PNF_.html it has proper controls, no fishing line or rubber bands. plus i like the folding prop idea, makes for some more damage resistance.

its definitely an interesting glider. what kinda flying interests you. that will probably be a rocket ship compared to what that other one was, and with ailerons is a while different set of controls to deal with.
either of these would be good. the bottom one is a awesome next step deisgn that has been around FOREVER. super simple. easy to fix, and can be pretty fully aerobatic.

those 2 look good, just not sure if im that good at flying to work em. at my current skill level, i prefer the planes & gliders made of high-grade styrofoam, like the kinetic or some of the plane models at nitroplanes.

got ya. that makes sense. those ones can be a little more giving a light crash. you want a FOAMIE.

yeah i want a foamie that will be flexible in a crash but also has a good amount of control over itself. The kinetic has its whole horizontal stabilizer act as the elevator, so theres more control right there.
