I messed up the Maisto and pulled the trigger on a Redcat rs-10 Crawler. It hasn't came in yet, so in the meantime I'm working on a scale F150 body. It started out as one of those fake mud painted rc's from BassPro shop. I stripped it down last night with Purple Power. Which by the way eats thru foil pans. :oop I painted it with a silver base and candy blue on top. Here's the progress so far.

A homemade fake winch. I also made a tow cable and climbing rope in the bed. I should be getting in the rest of my scale stuff before long.

Image

Now, therse lights aren't from Bill, sorry Bill, but I had them on my Maisto. I forgot to get a front pic. But with four led's, they're bright.

And thats all I've got so far. The RS 10 should come in the mail in a few days and I'll be ready. The 4 wheel steering looks pretty neat. The videos of it in action are pretty impressive, and it only cost me $160. RTR with a battery, remote with 4 mode steering and wall charger.

I agree. I hate to spend that much money on these things but I paid for it with some hard earned roofing money so the wife was a little forgiving when she saw the paypal account. The tires look like they could use a upgrade, so I pm'd you on the ones we talked about for the nitro. I really wanted a Axial, but man they are so expensive. One of these took 3rd out of 20 competitors in a novice crawling comp according to some dude on RCC (which I hate b.t.w.) Most of those guys trash the heck out of this thing because it's Redcat. To the majority of the people I've seen on there unless it's Axial it's a piece of crap. Which is the main reason I love this site. Everyone I've met here is open minded when it comes to name brand it seems. But there will be pics to follow it's arrival. I've got a boat build up I'm doing too. I'll be posting it later tonight probably. It started out as one of those RC surfer dudes on a board. Now it's a Traxxas powered boat. Bought it for my nephew for $10 and when we got it home all of the electronics were fried. So after he cried for a little we got busy and gutted it. But I'll post on it later. I fixed the Maisto b.t.w. with some motors from the RC Graveyard, I gave it to my nephew for "saving" my little one from the deep end of the pool at the hotel. After she jumped in without her arm floaties my little man jumped right in the water, he's not great at swimming , has partial use of his right hand due to diabetes, grabbed her from underneith and dog paddled her to the side of the pool. So his reward for being a hero was the crawler, a round of applause from us and bystanders and a little ice cream.

That body will look good on there. I've done some crawling with guys that have the Redcat and you're right, you'll want new tires. My SCX10 was out-crawling the one's that had the stock tires on it.

If the Redcat comes with 2.2 beadlocks, I've got some used Axial tires or Losi Claws laying around that I could get to you on the cheap.

body looks great!! and no worries on the leds..... one must save a buck where they can and use what they have around.

the red cats get trashed talked because there not axial or another high priced named rig. people must remember red cat`s where made and introduced for the budget minded people and as a introduction model. ive seen them personally and there not that bad of a rig and if i remember correctly a lot of axial parts will interchange with them. you also got to remember them guys on rcc are loyal to one brand and one brand only. i personally have thought about getting something like this for my kids to beat up on and to have some one go out with me.

the main thing is it to have and enjoy the hobby with no matter what brand it is. as long as your happy with it thats all that matters!!

1st, your boy is awesome, give him a big thumbs up for me.

2nd, redcat is good for the money. I have a redcat 4wd burshless vortex and rtr is was cheaper than a brushed 2wd stampede. So for me, it works and I haven't broke a single part. I'll put cheap aluminum parts up against plastic anyday. Well, depending on which parts, but you get my drift.

3rd, RCC. Well I can see both sides of that place since I've been a member over there since the very early days. On one hand, they are rought with new people. However, most innovations in rc crawling have come as a direct or indirect result of that forum and it's staff and members. The same can be said for axial, they have been a huge kick to the crawler industry. So in that way, I completely understand brand loyalty. That doesn't mean redcat is junk, and I think they agree, they have a section specifically for them afterall. You'll always have eliteist attitudes on the internet. Those who spens big bucks think they're better. While I fall into the smaller niche of builders who think built not bought is better. But really, the one having the most fun is better.

hmm, the tires i have are not soft. they will be fine for trail crawling. but for actual rock crawling. you could do better. but still they are decent tires. i bet you could just put a lot of vent holes in the wheel and they would at least soften a little. i am not talking to the tires down at all really. i used them for a run to test my 6x6 rig, and they worked great in the woods. they were awesome .

Nice lid and grats on the new rig. Hey if it gives you smiles it is a winning rig then. No matter what people say. Enjoy the new truck and keep the ideas coming.l8r,w.

It finally showed up. As a extra bonus, they sent the upgraded XT version. I put it on the course and the tires definately suck just like everyone said they would. But I've got some Losi claws coming to fix that curtousy of Mrnate. My Integy bent lower links should be here soon as well. But anyways, here are the pics.
Image

Topless... :boobs

Image

Had to make some new mounts for the body I've been working on. I rigged them up with magnets on the front mounts and tucked the rear mounts under the bed cover and use a long pin to get both from one side.

Image

Image
Image

Very good articulation. Setting on top of a spray paint can with a little to spare. It just barely rubs the corners of the front fenders extended all the way out.

Image
Image

The 4ws worked out great on my course. I've got some tight turns and a split bridge that drops down about 3 foot and it handled them with precision. It does drain the battery pretty fast though.

Image
All in all, I'm very happy with it. There are a few querks, such as the tires rubbing the motor wires , which I fixed by trimming a little of the edges of the outer lugs on the tires. I've got to move the on/off switch. It's hard to reach. I figure I can drop the electronics tray down about a half inch as well. It's got great cog now, but it can never be to good. Image

I didn't realize those had 4ws! It actually looks pretty decent. It's set up more like an old-school 1:8 or 1:6 crawler, with the shocks on the links instead of the axle.

As cool as the full articulation is, I imagine you'll end up wanting to limit that. One good way would be to just limit the shock travel with a little fuel tubing on the shaft.

I figured that. I've gotta wait on the rest of my stuff to get here before I dial it all in. The Losi's are a little more narrow and a little shorter than stock, so that'll fix my rubbing issue. The bent links should give me some more clearance underneith.

I used your magnet idea on the front mounts. I tried it all the way around, and the first time it went to jumping tryin to clear a log it went flying. So I used the pin style under the bed cover. Looks very clean, you can just barely see the rear mounts if you look under the cover. If I can find a front bumper I'm going to add some more lights though. The 4 leds up front light the way just fine, but I'd like some more.

I've had my RS10 for quite a while now & it still works perfectly :cheers

I'm looking into behind the axle steering, and maybe height adjustment if my rear steer ever gives out. I'm also working on duplicating "Stealth Mounts" using old shock bodies and some of the clip on spacers for them. But they'll go on the next project. I like the clean look of no clips in sight, plus none to get hung up with. As far as the shocks being mounted to the links, after I get my new bent links I'm going to put them on the axles. I've been researching mods to these on RCC. There is alot to be done. People are swapping the 380's out for 540's. But then they're stripping gears out. The 390's are doing fine so far with minimal clod stall. That may change when the tires get swapped due to more grip then slip, but we'll see. I really want to get into height adjustment though.

Looks like you'll be getting your tires today!

It sounds like you're doing a great job with running the truck and figuring out how to dial it in. Lot's of guys that get into crawling want all the answers before they ever run it, and won't get it on the rocks until they have it all modded up. That's when they realize that they have no idea how to mod it to do what works best for their truck and terrain. Starting from stock and working one change at a time is definitely the way to go.

I can't wait for it all to get here. My daughter and I went out last night around 9 pm for a night crawl. I def need more lights underneith and behind. The front ones are so bright you can't see to drive from the front, and it's dark from the back. I've got a tough course to run at the house (I'll get pics when it's done) and the Redcat can't make a few of the gates. Thats how I'm judging my mods. I'm working on moving my shocks to where they are more straight up and down instead of being laid out on the links. I get a little clod stall from the moa's due to having one esc. But it's so little that it's not worth addressing. I've got the Redcat body up for sell or trade now, trying to get a decent bumper for it.

i cant see where the mounts are man. so i cant tell, can you take some closer pics of how the body is mounted...?

and funny thing is i was gonna suggest moving the body lower to try and get a more scale look, and try to get a less rc look to it.

another way to make the body look lower is to adjust the suspension. trying to lay it down will make the whole chassis sit lower. one way to do that is to move the shocks more to the front on the links as well as the chassis. that will stiffen the suspension a bit. but play with it if you can. i bet you could even drill some hole in the outer most ears of the chassis to move the suspension mounts.

just spit ballin man. almost want that thing in my hands so i can make it looks like a scaler. :)
