Right now my Honcho has a waterproof XL5 and stock WK motor (HPI 27t 540 Saturn) with stock gearing and it ain't cutting it.

Someone suggested Magnetic Mayhem 22x1, gave me a link to a store that had them in stock but are now out. I suppose I should have jumped when I had the chance, tho didn't really have the money. So now I'm looking for other motor ideas.

Being a scale/trail truck it will see every kind of trail conditions and I would like a setup to be prepared for anything and everything. I would also like a bit of speed. Nothing crazy, just enough to get the tires loose, do some donuts, small jumps and some bashing fun. Which is why I'm considering brushless tho not entirely sure I wanna go that route. It will be doing some crawling so would probably lean more towards a sensored system so it doesn't glitch or cog.

I just checked out some youtube vids n most of the Honchos I saw with brushless systems were Novak 18.5 2S/3S Goats. I'm not planning on sticking a 3S in mine, maybe my 8 cell 4500 nimh pack, but I think I could be happy with this system. I do like the build-a-ballistic for the purpose I can match the can to my body's paint and opt for 13.5 turn (3300kv) over the 18.5 turn (2700kv). Which if I'm thinking properly, would give me that extra lil bit of speed I want while still having decent torque and control for crawling.

Then there's the topic of gearing, which even after 2 years still totally has me baffled. I have a grasp on size ratios n stuff but choosing a proper toothed gears without buying entire sets still eludes me. I guess it's all trial and error tho, so I may be stuck buying up a bunch of pinions and spurs.

...so anyone got any advice on what to get or what I'm already thinking of?

Hey Spliff. I am running a Tekin FXR ESC and 35Turn Pro motor in my Honcho. I am also running a 3 cell lipo now but was running a 2 cell in the begining. I left the stock 87T trans gear but went with 12t motor gear. Tons of wheel speed and torque as well. More than happy with the setup. It crawls real well as well as spins up the tires with ease. The nice thing is the Hotwire link to reprogram the ESC to suit my every need and it is fun to tinker around with. The 3 cell wheel speed is not a huge jump from the 2 cell but is noticable. I will get er out and film a bit for you soon as I can. Happy shopping and if you need any more info drop me a line.

Right now I'm only planning on buying one 3s pack, I might get two but I haven't decided yet. I'm also trying to stick with the waterproof XL5, at least for now. I just don't wanna spend a lot of money on something I don't wanna abuse thoroughly. I mean, I'd hate to drop a good chunk of cash on something and ruin it driving through water.... cuz I'm gonna at some point.

How are the temps on the FX-R in the Honcho on 2s/3s?... would I be able to seal it off in the Honcho's lil box with a Spekky rx?
I wish they made it with a gasket or seal like the TRX RX box (just bigger).

I definitely want something with a drag brake, which the XL5 doesn't have. I think I can play with my DX3.0 and come close to it acting like a drag. I don't exactly need it right away but I really, really like the Honcho and will have it when I move to northern CA where it will just be an utterly amazing area for this truck. I'm definitely considering your Tekin FX-R 35t Pro setup, $150 on Tower is fairly reasonable plus whatever coupon code is available.

I'm also looking to pick up a set of 1.9 Rok Lox ($25 pair) but tho the Trail Busters ($25 pair), Tomahawk ($25 pair), Mud Thrashers ($20 pair) and Dick Cepek ($25 pair) tires look good too.
I just know a lot of guys like the Rok Lox.

For wheels, I'm thinking the RC4WD Steel OEM beadlocks ($50 for set). Although the Mojave, Crisis and Cyclone wheels catch my eye (all $110 for set).

...could I get you to film it with 2s and 3s?... and possibly a 6cell if you have one?
I'm trying to convert to lipo only but my cheapo 6cells are quick to charge and just too easy to abuse to give up.

i cant really help you much on the elec part but i do know on the tires the rock locs are the best bang for your buck and you will not be disappointed with them.

They also make a 35turn reg wind combo for just over $100. I will try and get to it ASAP for you. Also I sealed mine in my box with my BEC with some silicone RTV. Then scored a Traxxas waterproof recv. box off ebay for .99. Then put that on one of the skid rails to seal off everything. Haven't had any trouble with any temps so far.l8r,w.
