Max and Savage posting up all those bug-hoppers and other various bug bodied rigs got me hooked. You guys have probably heard me mention that I thought the Tamtech GB02 front suspension might work under a scorcher body. Well I've been gathering parts and am about to begin building. Here's the plan and parts.

-Parma lexan baja beetle body(will snag a hardbody when I see a deal on ebay)
-TA02(HMMWV) rear axle/suspension
-Tamtech GB02 trailing arm front suspension
-Tamiya BFG's, narrowed fronts, on HPI classics
-custom chassis(yet to be built) to connect the two

I got the whole GB02 frontend for $20 plus shipping from rcmart, had most everything else except the body and wheels. Most know what a GB02 frontend looks like but here's a pic.
Image

And here's the rims I got.

I haven't had a chance to work on it yet any, but I did check out some plates for the body. Just can't decide on vintage tags or modern(recognizable) ones. What do you guys think?

I like that one as well, not only vintage looking but also WVU colors.

I finally got around to some work on this thing. Not much though. Got the front suspension attached to a piece of 2" x 1/8" aluminum, which is actually the hard part. Here's some pics, narrow front tires, wheels I'll be using on the rear, and generally how it will fit together.

Nope, not really. I did cut off the excess aluminum and mount the rear axle with 2 bolts, but that's it. Also picked up paint for it, black and silver., maybe some blue pinstriping here and there.

Finally worked on this thing some more. Made the steering, using a bellcrank setup.

Thanks, it's going to turn out to be a very cheap project. I just hate that I couldn't mount the battery the other way, instead of perpendicular to the chassis. Oh well.

Nice work ther J. Coming along nicely for sure. Would have been nice to lay the battery the other way. But once you mount it all up it should work out just fine. My Tamiya TL-01 has the battery that way as well.Keep is posted.l8r,c.

The TA02, which is where I got the rear axle, is also set up like that. A belly pan will cover the whole bottom protecting the battery, and making it look more realistic when it rolls upside down. I need a warm day to paint the body before it gets too cold. Got a paint question, 2-tone black and silver, which color backs which? I was thinking silver behind black because the black behind silver would darken it. But I've never really painted a lexan body the right way before, so need experts help. Wrench, nudge nudge, haha.

Always go darkest first, lightest last. Silver is last on my runner colors. Then backed by white backer over all. Just follow my basic 2 color how2 thread. PM me anytime if you need any help along the way.l8r,w.

Thanks guys. I slapped the redcat brushless in this thing just to check functionality, after pulling it all out of the pede. Needless to say it's overkill on power, but everything works so I can procede to mount some electronics, body, and I'd like to make a styrene interior. I remember driving a TA02 S10 with a stock 27T silver can and it was pretty fun, and that was 4wd. So I think it will be plenty for this thing in 2wd. It's more for fun and scale appearance instead of performance anyway.

No real update though there needs to be. The build-off over on scale4x4 ends Nov 15 so I will probably stop being lazy and work on it. Anyone have some thoughts on mounting the body without holes in it? Like velcro or magnets?

Got the first color of painting done on the body. Hope it's warm enough to finish tomorrow.

Finished the paint, had some bleed through in a couple spots though. I'm looking for some pinstriping to try and cover it up, and break up the paint line down the middle. I have part of the internal body mounts made and will make some for the sides as well. Velcro will be used on them. After that all I really need to do is add stickers and glue the headlight buckets into the body. As far as the rolling chassis goes, the rims are all that needs modified and then add electronics. I should have it running in time for the contest. I'll add bumpers and a driver/interior later.

It doesn't snow in Mexico but that won't stop me from running this in the slush haha. I found some maltese cross pinstriping today that is 1/2" wide and is glittery silver and transparent. Might look good might not, but I'll give it a shot. Maybe a cross on each door with my numbers, 528, inside? Silver cross on the black side and a black cross on the silver side.

Got some more work done on this. Found some silver/transparent pinstriping to break up the paint line. Not sure if I like the maltese crosses though. Made a belly pan that I can velcro mount the body from the sides to. And I gooped the LED light buckets into the headlight holes, which I think looks pretty good. Need to wire them up before a lights-out shot.

Took some pics today and need to pick one for the contest. I like the one with the church in the background on mulch I think.

Yeah, but I only slapped in a 35T crawler motor, since the can was black, for the photos. So I have not ran it, but just on carpet in the house. I don't expect much as far as performance, but it should look cool doing it. Then someday I'll find a deal on a hardbody and do it in true scorcher colors.
