I got it at Hobbytown USA years ago- I don't even know what size it actually was. A hobby shop w/ a good selection of styrene like Plastruct or Evergreen should have something that'll work. I think aluminum tubing would work even better, but I didn't have any that size to experiment with.

the body is not heavy as it looks. it gives better spring movement and good articulation like scale one.

I've gotta know how you did the rear steer? Did you get a donor front axle from another Maisto?

Hello Everyone;
I've been lurking for a few weeks now and decided to show a couple pictures of my mildly modded Maisto Crawler. While I've always appreciated RC's, I've never really gotten into them on a hobby level. I've owned basically toy grade RC's (Still have all of them) so far, including this one. It's no Losi MRC or even close to being hobby level. In fact I probably will never even run this thing outside as I'm quite aware of it's toy grade qualitys. But I can create plenty of challenging courses indoors and it has been alot of fun so far. So.... about the truck.

I hadn't bought an RC in years but saw these at Walmart when Christmas shopping for my nephew so I got him one. We had so much fun with his, my girlfriend got me one the day after Christmas. Well, I noticed the "fender farting" on my nephew's truck when we were playing with it so I took the front bumper off mine before I ever put batteries in it and it just progressed from there..

Current mods:
Reworked the front end for more tire clearance
Quick paint job with some Testers spray paint
Ertl Monster Treads tires, an idea I got from TexasJeff right here on RC Bashers. ;)
Rearranged the suspension links

I've got a 9.6v 2000mah pack and charger on order to upgrade the power. I'm also trying to get some slightly torquier motors from the manufacturer that made these. If I actually get my hands on the motors I want, I might try rear steer since I'll be wiring up the motors anyway.

before you do all that, buy you a Redcat RS10XT. You'll be SO glad you did. They dont cost a arm n leg either.

If I ever decide to go hobby level, I'd like to stay with the 1/18th scale so I'd probably do a Losi MRC Pro. But I'd like to see how far I can reasonably take this first. I'd rather learn and hone my skills on something cheap for now, LOL.

redcat does make a really nice 1/16th scale i think. just about the exact same size as the losi.
guess its exceed, but still a nice cheaper version of the losi if you are on a budget.

good work so far man. keep it up. you will be amazed at how much better a hobby grade rig handles compared to what the toy grades give you.

Good to research and ask about what your thinking, keep this in mind(comes from many many years of buying this stuff) if you buy and keep keep buying cheap stuff(knock offs and toy grade) think about how much you spend vs buy a good name brand that has tons of support you will most likely come out cheaper :wink
I know it sounds cheaper to buy toys and what not but it enough you just dont come out cheaper trust me and you will be happier. The good stuff just plain performs so much better.

Those are all great points. Yet while I agree with them, I'm not really after the most capable 1/18th scale crawler at this point but rather simply seeing what I can get out of this without hacking it up a bunch. I've seen these things modified to the point the electronics were completely swapped out to proportional speed control and steering and brushless motors crammed onto the axles. Now that's the point at which one should really just get a hobby grade kit. I'm definately not going that far with this. As far as cost, remember I didn't even buy this one, LOL, so I'm only into the paint and tires so far. The body in the background is one for my girlfriend as she bought one for herself too, LOL! I can definately see myself going to the Losi MRC/Pro but I'm just not done with this yet. ;)

Right on, it's the journey, not the destination, that matters.

That toy grade crawler is responsible for prolly at least 1/2 a dozen members here! Really cool.

Thats the beauty of the RC stuff on the shelves at WalMart & Target- its a doorway to the hobby.
